My New Home Has an Irrigation System: Now What?

Call us to find out! In many cases, inherited systems just needs some small fixes. And it’s worth it: a well-built system is a great asset to help you save water (and money) by putting the water specifically where your plants want it, in the correct amounts, at the timing and frequency they need. San Isidro Permaculture has decades of experience assessing and upgrading irrigation systems: whether you need a repair, want to enhance efficiency, or are interested in incorporating rainwater or greywater.

To evaluate if the system is functional, our technicians assess everything from the control timer on the wall, to the volume of water coming out of the emitters. Along the way, we check on the backflow valve, pump, irrigation manifold, valves, wiring, and tubing. All of these steps in the system are potential failure points, the cost of which can be either a very expensive water bill or dying plants.

But hopefully we find few problems, and we can just schedule you for the annual “winterization”, or shutting down of the system to prevent freeze damage. We do this by pushing out all of the water in the system with pressurized air. In the spring, we come back around for the “activation”, which includes a full inspection of the system for leaks. Those rabbits get thirsty in a dry springtime, and can try to help themselves to water in the irrigation lines! With a little maintenance and care to keep it running efficiently, the benefits of an irrigation system on your landscape will be impossible to ignore!
