Will Garden for Food

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.

Few activities are more satisfying than eating sun-ripened fruit right off the tree (or shrub!). It is the product of so many small actions: from your selecting and planting of the tree, caring for it and protecting it, to the vital processes that the plant and its constituents (soil, water, microorganisms) carry out every day, without any help from humans. Culminating in a piece of fruit, these actions represent an ancient collaboration between humans and nature: agriculture, in its purest and simplest form.

So why doesn’t everyone grow food? We’re getting there. Humans are gradually taking back the power of small-scale, regenerative agriculture. And there’s a very easy way to start: plant a fruit tree. Folks are sometimes surprised to learn just how many varieties of edible plants will grow in New Mexico. From Almonds to Goji Berries, Horseradish to Peaches, you could build an entire landscape around edible plants (and sometimes, we do). But the options can be daunting. If you want help choosing the right type of fruit tree, deciding where to plant or how to prepare the soil, we are happy to help.

If your site already has fruit trees, do give us a call. To keep them at a manageable size and optimize their production abilities, special pruning techniques are needed -- more frequently when trees are young. We also consult on soil amending, water needs, and disease and pest issues.

Fruiting plants  are an excellent way to boost the sustainability of your site. This ultimately benefits you, your neighborhood wildlife, and the value of your home.
